LORAIN — Frederick R. DiVirgilio, 83, of Lorain, died Thursday, May 20, 2010 at the home of Diana DiVirgilio in Elyria after a short illness.

He was born March 29, 1927 in Perryopolis, Pennsylvania and had resided in Lorain after he was discharged from the military. Fred served with the U.S. Army in Germany during World War II. He worked at Thew Shovel in Lorain as a crane operator and then at the Ford Assembly Plant as an inspector for 34 years before retiring.

Fred was a loving and caring father who was devoted to his family. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing, traveling to Wyoming to hunt elk, rabbit hunting and going to McDonalds in Amherst for his morning coffee.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Lena DiVirgilio (nee Contini), son Frederick J. DiVirgilio of Lorain, daughter Sandra DiVirgilio of Florida, grandchildren Randy Lewis DiVirgilio and Danielle Jean DiVirgilio, both of Georgia, 6 great grandchildren, brothers Albert, Henry, Dino, Russell and Edmond DiVirgilio, all of Pennsylvania and sisters Louise and Loretta, both of Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his son Randy Frederick DiVirgilio on February 26, 2009, parents Michael and Edith (Mitchell) DiVirgilio and brother Jimmy DiVirgilio.

The family will receive friends Friday 5-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Private family funeral services will be held after the viewing. The Rev. Chuck Henkle, associate pastor of the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the VFW Post 451 and the American Legion Post 30 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
