John Meurer emigrated with his father Johann, mother and siblings as well as his Uncle Andreas Meurer (born 1832). His father Johann Meurer and uncle Andreas were sons of Johann Georg Meurer (1786-1865) and Susanna Burbach Meurer (1791-1843) of Wurges, Germany. The reason Andreas Meurer stayed in New York, was to earn and establish himself, in order to return to Wurges, Germany to marry Dorothea Weigand in 1864. They both then returned to New York and Andreas worked there as a locksmith. More research is needed to trace Andreas' family in the New York area.
The "missing Meurer" uncle was the eldest son Hubert (born 1814). Hubert Meurer emigrated a few years earlier to Texas with his wife Catherine and 3 young children, arriving in Galveston, then on to the Port of Indianola in Oct 1846. Hubert unfortunately drowned on 12 January 1847 crossing the Guadalupe River with wagon and processions, as they arrived at the German settlement of New Braunfels, Texas. His wife Maria Mohler Meurer and 3 small children survived watching the tragedy from the river bank.
Hubert Meurer's widow, Maria Mohler Meurer married Anton Eisenbach (from Vilmar near Wurges) in Oct 1847 and the family settled in Pin Oak, Bastrop County Texas. The family DID correspond with the Meurer parents and brothers back in Wurges. One of Hubert's daughters Catherine married John Wolf from Wurges and they, along with Catherine's brother John Meurer ranched at Garfield, Bastrop County, Texas. The other Hubert Meurer child Anna Maria, married Henry Brahm and remained near Pin Oak, Bastrop County.
By 1882 John Henry Meurer, his wife and children moved from Missouri and joined Maria Meurer Eisenbach (deceased brother Hubert's wife) and her grown children (his cousins) in Bastrop, County.
Six of John Henry Meurer's children were born in Bastrop and for a time they lived with Hubert Meurer's children and cousins John Meurer and John Wolf (husband of cousin Catherina Meurer) on the Garfield Texas adjacent ranches (today still marked by intersecting "Wolf and Meurer Lanes").
John Henry Meurer, did convince one son of his cousin (Catherine Meurer Wolf) to move to Muenster, Texas in the mid-1890's. The younger cousin, Henry Martin Wolf (born 1871) was in his early 20's, but an experienced horseman and rancher. He shipped cattle and horses by train that were provided by his father John Wolf as inheritance, to land they purchased west of Muenster.
Henry Martin Wolf, settled, married and is buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Muenster. He had many descendants in the Muenster area. John Henry Meurer moved on to establish Scotland Texas and several of his children and descendants returned to Muenster.
Henry Martin Wolf (1871-1951) and his 2nd cousin John William Meurer (1874-1941) are actually buried just a row apart in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Muenster.
The Meurer brothers from Wurges, Germany did not lose contact with each other's families but time did dim the memories of the descendants some. - Dale Wolf 940 735 1706 (email on my FAG account).
