Tommy Ray served with the Louisville Division of Police from 1970 until his death. On March 17, 1973, he responded to what was believed to be a request for a burglary report from a local grocery store owner. Unknown to Officer Ray there was a robbery in progress inside the store when he arrived. When Officer Ray entered the store the robber shot and critically wounded him. The assailant then fled the scene. Officer Ray died a month later from the wounds he had sustained.
Officer Ray was survived by a daughter and two sons.
