Widow of Former Governor of Minnesota Passes Away
The death of Mrs. Henry M. Rice of St. Paul occurred at her residence in the Angus yesterday. Mrs. Rice was born near Rome, N.Y., but was educated at Washington, where her grandparents resided, and where she met Henry M. Rice, who was in Washington on business connected with Minnesota territory.
Mr. and Mrs. Rice were married in Richmond, Va, in March, 1849, and came at once to Minnesota, and ever since Mrs. Rice has been identified with the social life of St. Paul, of which she has been ever one of its chief ornaments. Always a famous beauty, Mrs. Rice was never more admired then when, during the decade which preceded the civil war, she lived in Washington when her husband represented this state in the house and the senate. The Rice home there was a rendezvous for such men as President Lincoln, Charles Sumner, Admiral Dahlgren, the Breckenridges, Tombs, Douglas and other distinguished men of that period.
Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Rice, four of whom survive her, Mrs. Maurice Auerbach, of St. Paul, Mrs. E.E. Thompson, wife of Colonel R.G. Thompson, now on her way home from the Philipines; Mrs. Luther E. Newport of New York and Frederick E. Rice of St. Paul.
The funeral will take place from the Church of St. John the Evangelist Friday at 2:30 p.m.
