Civil War Union Army Officer. He served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 1st Pennsylvania Reserves, being mustered in on June 9, 1861. He led his regiment through the Spring 1862 Peninsular Campaign, and in the September 1862 Antietam Campaign, briefly leading his brigade as well during that time. He resigned his commission on November 1, 1862, having being appointed to the staff of Pennsylvania Governor Andrew Curtin.
