Ruth L. Mayfield, 91, died on April 16, 2010 at her home in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Family will greet family and friends at Strode Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at the Highland Park United Methodist Church in Stillwater. A private family burial will follow. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on July 2, 1918 in Kendrick, Oklahoma to Jesse C. and Olive Morton Melton. She married Orval R. Mayfield on June 25, 1937 in Pawnee, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on September 14, 1999.

She graduated from Kendrick High School and later became a homemaker. Ruth was a member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church, Twentieth Century Book Club, a Past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, and for many years, a member of the Stillwater Medical Center Auxiliary, working in the gift shop. Her passion was golf. She was a long-time member of the Stillwater Country Club Women's Golf and played golf whenever and wherever the opportunity arose.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, W.A. Melton, Donald Melton, and William Melton; sisters, Emma Lou Sykes and Dixie McAteer; and her parents.

She is survived by her daughter, Frances Mayfield Smalley and husband, Dr. Tim K. Smalley; grandson, Dr. Kent R. Smalley, of Arizona, and wife, Tonya, and step-great-grandchildren, Kayla and Zack Stokes; granddaughter, Tara R. Smalley, of Norman, Oklahoma; brother, James Melton and wife, Helen, of California; and sister, Peggy (Mrs. William) Armstrong, of Stillwater.
