James Mansur, Sr. was born in Methuen, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony on Sep. 2, 1744 to John Mansur II (1705 - 1776) and Hannah (Lovejoy) Mansur (1718 - 1776).
James was a farmer and served in the the Revolutionary War. He was part of a militia that marched on "The Call of Alarm", Apr. 19, 1775. Arriving at Concord too late to join the battle, they continued to Bunker Hill to stand guard. James served for 6-1/2 days. He then paid a stand-in to take his place so he could return to his farm. He also served one year in 1776 and on 29 June 1777 (Methuen records).
James was married to Mary Harris, the daughter of Deacon John Harris (1725 - 1801) and Elizabeth (Clark) Harris (1724 - 1782), on Mar. 26, 1776, in Methuen, by Rev. Christopher Sargent. They had nine children, all born in Dracut (see Mary's memorial).
James died in 1816 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery, Methuen, beside his father (House of Mansur, p. 27).
