Vernice Leroy Coleman was born on March 30, 1921 at the family's home near Clearlake, Oklahoma to Hayes and Lillie Elizabeth (Conine) Coleman. Vernice was reared on the farm near Clearlake and graduated from Beaver High School. He was inducted into the United States Navy and served his country during World War II as a Machinist Mate First Class. Vernice was onboard the LST 345 during the Normandy Landing.
He was united in marriage to Hazel Earnie Pierce on April 14, 1946 in Liberal, Kansas. They made their home in Beaver until the summer of 1963, when they moved to Woodward. Vernice and Hazel continued to live in Woodward until moving to the Baptist Retirement Center in March 2004. In Beaver Vernice worked for the Northern Natural Gas Company and owned and operated the Coleman Appliance Center. After the family moved to Woodward, he worked for Quincy Johnston and later worked as an independent home appliance serviceman.
Vernice loved his wife Hazel, and they literally lived for each other. He looked forward to the times with his children and grandchildren, and loved spending hours pruning and caring for the many roses and flowers in their backyard garden in Woodward. Vernice loved the Lord, and he and his wife Hazel were active members of the Woodward Church of the Nazarene before moving to Oklahoma City.
He is survived by his son and wife, Lynford and Donna Coleman of Lynn Haven, Florida; his daughter and her husband, Karen and Dr. J.D. Crooks of Oklahoma City; six grandchildren, Michael and Justin Crooks, Michelle Heath and Kristen Bibbs, Scott and Jeffrey Coleman; twelve great-grandchildren, John Michael, Juliet, and Audrey Crooks, Connor, Coby, and Cale Heath, Lincoln and Lauren Crooks, Madison Bibbs, Jeremy, Caroline and Nicholas Coleman; other relatives and friends.
Vernice was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and his wife, Hazel on April 3, 2006.
The family extends their appreciation to the nurses and caregivers at Lackey Manor, Baptist Village Oklahoma City. The family also extends their heart felt gratitude to Shannon Coomer, an exceptional caregiver who always went above and beyond. We can never repay Shannon for the consistent and loving way he cared for Vernice.
