Alex was born in Lower Turkeyfoot Township on January 8, 1853, a son of the late John and Martha Ansell. The family moved to Middlecreek Township and he spent most of his life there, although he had resided for a time in Fayette County, PA, being employed as a coke drawer.
He married Barbara Ellen Miller in Fayette County on September 24, 1875, and she died on February 24, 1922.
Surviving children are John Ansell of Middlecreek Township, Mrs. Charles Ross (Lydia J.) Henry of New Centerville, Homer Ansell of Somerset, R.D.1, George Ansell of Uniontown, Henry Ansell of Hopwood, Mrs. Ross (Bertha S.) Pletcher of near Sculton and Mrs. Ira Ellsworth (Hazel Sara) Pletcher of Rockwood, R.D.2. There are 41 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Rachel Miller of Leisenring No. 1, Fayette County, PA, is a surviving sister.
