Missouri Ann was born in Kentucky and was the daughter of Richard and Sarah Sanders of Izard County, Arkansas. From Kentucky, the family had migrated through Tennessee into Arkansas. Ann's brother, Ben Sanders, had the Riverview Hotel in Calico Rock for many years.
Missouri Ann Sanders married Nick Rand on September 7, 1865. To this marriage were born 10 children; Sarah Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Susan Adeline, Lucy Isabelle, Martha Frances, James Owen, Jennie, Edward Nicholas, Jr., Benjamin Arthur, and John Henry. Two of the little girls died on the same day in September 1875 and the third died less than two weeks later. This was the result of a medicine mistakenly prescribed.
