"OBITUARY * Taken from Baldwinsville Papers - from Clippings collected by Mrs. D. C, Turner, Now in Baldwinsville Library"

Hiram Howard, one of our best known businessmen, died at his home in West Genesee Street, Friday, November 5, 1915, aged 68 years.

Mr. Howard was taken ill on Friday, October 29th. The following Monday he was able to go to his store in the Grange block, where he remained a short time. That afternoon, he suffered a stroke of paralysis and his condition rapidly became serious, the end coming last Friday morning.

Hiram Howard was born in Granby, Oswego County, August 17, 1847. James Howard, his father, came to Onondaga County from Washington County, this state, in 1844 and settled near Jacksonville. Hiram was educated in the Fulton schools. He married Caroline L., daughter of L. D. Sisco, of this place, who died in 1882, leaving three children, Frederick S., now of San Francisco, Cal., Arthur L., of this village, and Clarence E., of Syracuse. In 1883 he married Augusta M., daughter of Giles Easton of Fulton, who survives him.

In 1869 he entered business in Baldwinsville as junior partner of the jewelry firm of Luckey & Howard. The partnership was dissolved in 1875, Mr. Howard opening a new store. In 1881 he purchased the Herrick opera house block and erected a large three story block, known as the Howard Opera House block, his jewelry and music store being located in this building until it burned on March 1, 1914. The Howard Opera house was replaced by the Grange hall, which was constructed last year, Mr. Howard opening a new store in the new building last December.

Mr. Howard had a large circle of friends and was well known as an enterprising and energetic businessman. He served as president [mayor] of the village and was always interested in its development and welfare.

He was a member of Seneca River Lodge, F. and A. M., and the Masonic club.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Charles S. Champlin were held at the home in West Genesee Street Monday afternoon at two o'clock, Seneca River Lodge conducting the services at the grave. Burial was made in Riverview cemetery. The bearers were W. H. Russell, W. H. Tappan, J. E. Connell, George H. Casler, George Hosler and F. F. Bently.
