Billings Matron Dies in Hospital

Mrs. Clara Louise Merritt, 88, wife of Merit Millard Merritt, died Wednesday at a state hospital. Death came as a result of the infirmities of age. Mrs. Merritt had been hospitalized since October 22, and had been ill for the last year.

She was born July 12, 1862, in St. Paul, MN, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August E. Coffers. She was married April 18, 1883 in St. Paul. Mr. and Mrs. Merritt homesteaded near Niobrara, Nebraska, before moving to Hysham in 1911, where they operated a garage and dray business.

Mrs. Merritt was active in Red Cross work. The Merritts moved to Billings in 1932.

She is survived by the widower; two sons: Irvin M. Merritt of Billings, MT; and Robert R. Merritt of Hysham; 16 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Smith's funeral chapel, with the Rev. Claire L. Harris officiating. Burial will be in Mountview cemetery. The body will be returned to Billings Thursday.
