PRENDERGAST, Richard Owen "Bud" a 25-year resident of Holiday, passed away on May 11, 2010. He celebrated his 90th birthday the previous December with family members. Bud was born in New York City and raised in Valley Stream NY. He graduated from Valley Stream High School in 1937 and from the University of Mississippi in 1941 with an ROTC commission. Bud joined the 82nd Airborne Division and flew into Holland in a glider as part of the D-Day invasion. He served in the 82nd under General Gavin as a Platoon Leader in a reconnaissance section throughout the war and saw combat in Holland, France and Germany, including the Battle of the Bulge. After crossing the Elbe his platoon linked up with Russian units toward the end of the war. Bud was awarded the Silver Star for valor as well as the Bronze Star. He also served in Korea with the 42nd Artillery Division. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Dorothy Prendergast; his daughters Jera Verne and Kathleen Prendergast from his marriage to Abbie Shea Prendergast, now deceased; and his grandsons Peter R. Verne and Jeremy P. Verne. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
