Veteran Chancery Clerk Buried Sunday, February 2

Funeral services for Joe M. Moore, 57, Holmes County Chancery Clerk of Lexington, were held Sunday, February 2 at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Lexington. Officiating minister was the Rev. Tom Hollowell. Interment was in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Lexington with Southern Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Moore died unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack on Friday, January 31 at his home in Lexington.

A native of Holmes County, Mr. Moore was just beginning his seventeenth year as chancery clerk of Holmes County. He was active in the Mississippi Chancery Clerks’ Association. He was the fourth member of his family to hold public office in Holmes County. His grandfather, Joseph Moore was county treasurer in 1900; his father, Joe H. Moore was a supervisor, and his mother, Ruth Miles Moore, later filled his father’s unexpired term.

Mr. Moore was a graduate and loyal supporter of Mississippi State University; was past president of the Lexington and Durant Rotary Clubs; was a veteran of the United States Air Force and served as a pilot from 1954 to 1956; was a substitute rural mail carrier; was plant manager of Airco Plastics in Durant for seven years and was manager of Standard Plastics in Lexington for five years; and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Lexington.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jamie Tate Moore of Lexington; a daughter, Miss Maureen Moore of Houston, Texas; and a sister, Mrs. Camella M. Zibilich of New Orleans, Louisiana.

Active pallbearers were Pat M. Barrett, Jr., Ed Thurmond, Bobby Fisher, Harold Hammett, Jr., Calvin Moore, and Bill Warrington.

Honorary pallbearers were Judge E. G. Cortright, Judge Ray Montgomery, and present and past members of the Holmes County Board of Supervisors.
