SCIMECA -- William B., M.D., 85. Born in St. Louis, MO in 1920, to Else Roof, D.D.S., a native of Berlin, Germany, and Salvatore Albert Scimeca, M.D., a native of Ciminna, Sicily. He spent his early years in Kansas City, KS, until moving in 1931 to his adopted hometown of Caney, KS, where his father established the Scimeca Memorial Hospital. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout before graduating from Caney High School in 1937, and attended Coffeyville Junior College before going to the University of Kansas. He attended medical school at K.U. and served his internship at Jersey City Memorial Hospital in New Jersey as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Upon his discharge in 1945, he practiced medicine in Caney with his father and with his brother, Michael Scimeca, M.D., before setting up his own practice in Moline, KS and then Sedan, KS. He married Margaret Hannon in Caney in 1947. In 1952, he moved his family (then of four) to Rochester, MN, to pursue a surgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, where he received a Masters in Surgery. Upon completion of his fellowship in 1956, he established his practice of medicine and general surgery in Tulsa, maintaining staff privileges at St. John, St. Francis and Hillcrest hospitals until retiring in 1995.

He was a member of the 50-year Club of the American Medical Association and belonged to the Oklahoma Medical Association and the Tulsa County Medical Society and the Mayo Clinic Alumni Association. While at K.U. he was a member of the Phi Chi medical fraternity. He was a third generation physician appreciated by his patients for his bedside manner, taking the time to listen and his meticulous surgical technique.

A tremendous husband, father and grandfather, his children and then his grandchildren were often gifted by his insight and occasional "lectures". Most of his children and grandchildren will now admit that he was always right. He enjoyed spending time with his family and engaging in various activities, including collecting automobiles, being a typical tourist, cat and dog training, and having lunch and playing poker with his group of doctor friends. He was also fond of borka nuts, gerbil treats and tortoises. "He always lived within his means."

Dr. Scimeca is survived by: his wife of 58 years, Margaret H. Scimeca of Tulsa; and his 6 children, in (age) order, Ann Marie McGuffee and her husband, Robert of Colorado Springs, CO, Kathleen Fenton of Lima, OH, William Hannon Scimeca, M.D. and his wife, Jennifer of Oklahoma City, OK, Richard Roof Scimeca and his wife, Dilma Quezada Scimeca of Austin, TX, Mary Holland and her husband, Michael of Double Oak, TX, and James Scimeca and his wife, Melissa of Edmond, OK. He is also survived by: 14 grandchildren; as well as his sisters, Cathy Alexander and Elsie Heidrick, both of Houston, TX and Irene Artz, D.D.S. of Wichita; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by: his parents; his brothers, Michael Scimeca, M.D., and S.A. Scimeca, D.D.S.; a sister, Marguerita Yarham.
