John S. Bedford son of Jonas Monroe Bedford born in NC and Sarah Frances McLure born in Pendleton, Anderson Co, SC. Obsequies for John Steven Bedford, 84, father of Jona Holcomb, Albert Sidney and Willie Lee and Miss Hattie Bedford, A Fresno school teacher, were conducted to-day at the chapel of the Mission Undertaking Company and were followed by burial in Belmont Memorial Park. He died Monday.

From the 1892 biographical sketches of prominent Valley residents:
J. S. Bedford, County Surveyor of Fresno County was born in Cherokee County, Georgia, in 1848. His parents moved to Marshall County, Alabama, in 1859, where the father carried on farming, and where young Bedford received his education. He attended the high school at Jacksonville, Alabama, and graduated in 1865. Then he gave attention to the study of surveying and in 1868 began work in Nebraska on the Missouri and Pacific Railroad and the M. K. & T. Railroad, and was engaged one year in locating and laying out these roads.Married Mary Falona Holcomb on 18 Mar 1875 in Erath, TX Mr. Bedford came to Fresno in 1885, and was engaged in fruit culture about two years, investing in city and ranch property. ** He left California for Texas where he secured a job there in the oil fields locating oil. Mrs Bedford lived with her son Ab on College Ave with her daughters Hattie and Dickie. Ab married Minnie. Minnie wrote to her father in law and begged for him to return. Mrs. Bedford purchased a home and moved with her daughters.
John died in the home of his son Albert "Ab" S. Bedford at 1230 Cottage Avenue. Mr. Bedford was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary and daughter Katie S. ** information provided by his granddaughter Juel Blanche Bedford Clawson Seal
