Mar 1 1846 he enlisted and served 2-1/2 years under Gen. David E. Twiggs in the Mexican War. He was discharged Aug 1848 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

April 6 1852 he married Maria E. Paine (1831-??)

Civil War Service - He enlisted on 3 May 1861 at Macomb, Illinois. He was Commissioned in Company A, 16th Infantry Regiment Illinois as a 2nd Lieutenant on 24 May 1861 at Quincy, Illinois. He was promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on 13 Mar 1862. He was dismissed on Sep 7 1863.

Hiram and Maria had three children:

Frank (1855-??)
Louisa (1857-??)

Hiram was a silversmith.
