Worked as a freighter, farmer, horse trainer sheep herder, etc. to support his family. He was a tall man, played the banjo, and was known for helping out his neighbors when they were in need. Married first wife Emma Matilda Jenson on October 12, 1891 in Parowan, UT. Eight years later, she died in childbirth, leaving four young children -- one son and three daughters. On September 28, 1904 in Cedar City, Kie married a second time, this time to Ethel Winsor. They were the parents of eight children -- five daughters and three sons. Kie died of pneumonia at age 53.
