William Lamont Abbott
SALISBURY - William Lamont Abbott, (retired Lt. Col., U.S. Army), 93, of Salisbury, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Abbott was born the eldest son of Arthur W. and Helen Abbott on Dec. 31, 1915, in Lisle Township, DuPage County, Ill. He received a BA degree from North Central College and DVM from Ohio State University.
He retired from the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps in November 1961 following 21 years of continuous service, including World War II and Korea. He also performed various duty assignments stateside, overseas in Alaska, the Far East and Europe.
Following retirement from the U.S. Army, he was employed for five years with North Carolina Department of Agriculture as Assistant State Supervisor in the state meat and poultry inspection program.
In 1967, Mr. Abbott moved to Wisconsin Department of Agriculture as Assistant Administrator of the Meat Inspection Division, which at that time was establishing a new state meat inspection program, and continued in that position until retirement in March 1981.
He was a life-member of The Retired Officers Association, which became Military Officers Association of America (MOOA) on Jan. 1, 2003; Veterans of Foreign Wars; Disabled American Veterans; BPOE Elks; Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association; Madison Firing Squad; and Rowan County Honor Guard.
Mr. Abbott was preceded in death by his wife, Grace P. Abbott, on Feb. 8, 2002.
Survivors include his daughters, Katherine G. Jones of Salisbury, Dorothy Glasgow and Linda G. Dupree, both of Raleigh, and Helen A. Rife of Tallahassee, Fla.; and sister, Ruthanne A. Baird of Elmhurst, Ill.
Graveside Service: 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30 at Salisbury National Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Ft. Bragg Honor Guard.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks, Alzheimer's Unit, 820 Klumac Road, Salisbury, NC 28144.
