Alexander was a corn and tobacco farmer. Alexander and Sarelda lived in Pulaski County, Kentucky. They had eleven children. Their oldest son, John Perry Chumbley moved to Grayson County in a community called Kentuckytown. Alexander had developed heart disease. He felt that he would not live long and his eight single children would be better off in Texas. They moved to Texas in 1893. A year or so later they moved to the Sweat Box community between Commerce and Ladonia and near the Delta-Hunt County Line.
