William Barnett Baker was the second son and the sixth child of Absalom Baker and Harriet Gentry. He was born and raised in Van Buren Twp., Monroe Co., IN.
At the age of twenty he purchased an eighty acre farm in the same township.
He married 5 Oct 1857 to Harriet R. Denny, the daughter of James H. Denny, a successful farmer. The couple had four children:
Florence G [1859 – 1934]
Mary H [1860 – 1935]
Thomas A [1863 – 1938]
Jennie R [1865-1866]
His wife died November 6, 1865, most likely as a result of complications following the birth of their last child.
In Sept. 1865 he sold his farm and moved to Stanford where he opened a general merchandise store, under the firm name of Baker Bros.
He remarried on Sep 27 1866, to Miss Hannah Yoho, daughter of Samuel Yoho. Mrs. Baker was a member of the Baptist church. They had one child---
Birdie O. [1868-1898].
Baker Bros. continued until 1872, at which time they sold out, one year later repurchasing the same stock.
In July 1881 Absalom moved to Bloomington where he became County Commissioner. He served as Postmaster at Stanford for several years, and as Township Assessor for two years. On August 6, 1883 he formed a partnership with C.S. Neeld. He was still operating a grocery in 1900.
Politically he was a Republican.

William B. Baker, 84 years old and one of the pioneer citizens of Bloomington, died at noon today of the infirmities of old age at the family residence, corner of Fourth and Grant streets.
Mr. Baker had been failing in his health for several years on account of his advanced age. He was a carpenter for many years and assisted in building some of the most substantial houses in the city.
He is survived by the widow and three children, Mrs. W. T. Breeden, Mrs. S. E. Carmichael, and Thomas Baker. Mrs. Carmichael is now in Florida. He was a member of the First Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be private at 9:30 Monday at the residence. Friends may view the body on Sunday from 2 until 8 p.m. The interment will be at the Burch cemetery.
