He loved his family, life, and Montana.
He is greatly missed.

Bill was born Sept. 7, 1921, to Mary Edwards and Raymond Barnett. He lived on the Lazy Day Dude Ranch (now the Lutheran Church Camp) and Beehive Ranch on the Stillwater in his early years and then moved to Billings, where he graduated high school in 1939. He attended MSU in Missoula and Rocky Mountain College. In September 1941, he joined the Navy Air Corps and earned his wings in Corpus Christie, Texas.
On the last day of his leave on Sept. 26, 1942, before reporting to Norfolk, Va., he married the love of his life, Dorothe Meier.
,brIn December 1942, he left for the South Pacific and served his country flying reconnaissance missions in PBYs. He returned in October 1944 and was stationed at Anacostia Naval Air Station in Washington, D.C. He was discharged in October 1945 and returned to Billings, where he was self employed until he built a supermarket in Fort Smith during the dam construction. His last adventure was managing Red Lodge Mountain and retiring in 1986.

His most recent residence was in Absarokee, where he painstakingly restored several old sheep wagons, and anyone who knew him could always recognize his camp and was welcomed at his fire with a smile. And on Sept. 1, 2007, after spending an exceptional summer with family and friends, William Covington Barnett left this earthly world behind him.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years; his children, Terri and Gary Johanson, Jacque Barnett Dexter; and daughter-in-law Ginger Barnett; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister Mary Jayne (Wayne) VanAtta and brother Larry (Patty) Barnett, and sister-in-law Barbara (Dean) Baird; also numerous nieces and nephews, many friends and his faithful dog Blue.

He was preceded in death by his son, William Rock Barnett; and brother Donn Barnett.
