According to census records, Slaughter Hill was born in 1841. According to his Civil War records, he was born in 1840. His father was John "Jack" Hill (1788-1881). His mother's name may have been Mary or Elizabeth Herring. She is believed to have been Hill's second wife. According to family trees, Slaughter's grandfather Slaughter Hill (1744-1818) was the great grandfather of Slaughter H. Hill (1840-1916) of Taylor County, Ga. On Aug. 23, 1865, Slaughter married Elizabeth Barnes, the daughter of Elias Barnes and Samantha Herring Barnes. (Elizabeth's sister Charlotte married Moses Hill, Slaughter's brother.) In 1900, Slaughter and Elizabeth reported that they had been married 35 years and that only one of their three children, Susanna Hill , 33, was alive. There seems to be no record of her after 1900. According to family trees, Elizabeth died about 1905. There is no record of her place of burial, but it seems most likely that she is in an unmarked grave next to her husband's grave. In 1910, Slaughter was living with the family of his nephew John R. Hill, the son of Moses and Charlotte Barnes Hill. In January 1920, he was boarding in the home of H. P. Smith. He died on Feb. 26, 1920. Other than the four years he was away during the Civil War, he had lived in Macon County all of his life.
