James Bryant Cockrum was the son of Eliza Jane Rhoades Cockrum 1846 - 1888 and James C. Cockrum 1836 - 1889. He was born on 10 JUL 1885 in Gainsville, Ozark Co., Missouri. He went to work in the mines at a very early age. He was a zink minor working for the Warren Brewer Mines just over in Oklahoma.

He won the heart of a pretty sixteen year old named Matilda Francis Stout. He was a very good looking man with blue eyes, cold black hair, and a smile that just warmed you. On April 06, 1914 they were married. On December 22, 1915 their son, James Edward Cockrum was born. Life was hard but life was good.

He awoke one morning with a big red mark on his neck that was very painful. He went on to work. It was just a bug bite. By the end of his shift, it was a big lump weeping in the middle. The next day after work he went to the doctor. Apparently he had been bitten by spider. On September 17, 1918 he dies from complications from that spider bite leaving young widow and a little baby.
