A house carpenter, he was killed when struck by lightning while building the A. D. Preston home on South Heber Street, along with the architect J. Price Beckley, grandson of Gen. Alfred Beckley, the town's founder and namesake.

He left a widow and two sons, who later moved to Charlestown and El Paso, Texas.
