Howard Skyles Ross was born to Harry Ross and an unknown mother. He was adopted at around the age of five by his Uncle Lewis and Aunt Anna, brother and sister-in-law of his father. Howard never married, but maintained the family farm which his uncle started. When asked about why he never married by a nephew, he replied "Grandma," meaning Anna Ross, his adoptive mother, who was well known for being overprotective of her children.
