James was first married to Lydia Jane "Liddy" Daniel Moody on 27 May 1849, they had a son Nicholas Lyde Counts (b. 23 Nov 1849 and d. 11 Oct 1915)

(Additional information provided by Ray Smith, Grandson of John Houston Counts: James W. Counts was married (1) Lydia (Daniel) Moody and (2) Harriet Miller (whose name is on the stone in the cemetery. James W. Countws and Lydia (Daniel) Moody Smith had these children: Jesse B. Counts B: June 23, 1848; Nicholas Leyde Counts, B: 1850; James Ellis Counts, B:September 20, 1851; twins Harriet Jane and John Houston Counts, B:April, 1854; Louisa Counts, B: 1857; and Charles Counts, B:1859.)

Second marriage was to Harriett E. Miller (b. 27 Apr 1830 in St. Francois Co., MO and d. 24 Feb 1904 in Atlanta, GA. There were no known children from this marriage and the marriage date was Aft. 1860.
