His last assignment was as the Commanding General of Madigan Army Hospital until his retirement from active service in 1962. He attended Otterbein College in Ohio, the University of Mississippi, and received his Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University. In 1948 he received a Master of Public Health from Harvard University. General Crawford began his military career in the Ohio National Guard in Ohio National Guard in 1921 and received his commission as a medical officer in the Regular Army in 1932. He interned at Letterman Army Hospital and until 1942, held various stateside positions on surgical service in Army Hospitals. In August 1942 he was assigned as Division Surgeon of the 78th Infantry and held that position until 1943, at which time he assumed command of the 67th Evacuation Hospital until the end of the war. He participated in the Normandy, Northern France, Ardenes, Central Europe and Rhineland campaigns during World War II. After World War II General Crawford served in various capacities both in Europe and in the United States. Prior to his Madigan assignment he was Commanding General, Headquarters 9th Hospital Center in Landstuhl, Germany. His decorations include the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, 1921 and received his commission as a medical officer in the Regular Army in 1932. He interned at Letterman Army Hospital and until 1942, held various stateside positions on surgical service in Army Hospitals.
