The Marion Sentinel Thursday March 19, 1891
--Mrs. Sarah Harlan died at 6:30 this Thursday, morning. Funeral will be held Saturday at two p.m. from residence on north Eleventh street. This announcement came suddenly and unexpected. Though she had been suffering with la grippe and other complications the past week none were aware of anything serious in her condition. She was the mother of Mrs. Mary Garrett, who resides in western Iowa, and Pliny, L.C. and Horace Harlan of this city.

The Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette Friday March 20, 1891
The sad announcement is made that Mrs. Sarah E. Harlan, the wife of the late Capt. W.H. Harlan, died yesterday morning at half past six. Her age was about sixty-three. She was the mother of six children five of whom survive her. Mrs. O.E. Garrett, her oldest, came in this morning from Murray, Iowa, while H.L. Harlan, L.C., Pliny and W.H., all live here. Mr. and Mrs. Harlan were old and much respected citizens having came to Marion fully forty years ago. Funeral will take place from the house Saturday afternoon at two o'clock.
