Forrest Elwood "Rocky" Sawyer was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina to the parents of William Jessie and Mattie Sawyer on July 10, 1919. He graduated from Central High School in 1938 and spent 8 years serving in the United States Navy. He is the survivor of the USS Yorktown in the Battle of Midway and also served on the USS Saratoga and the USS Enterprise. He was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Ribbon and the American Defense Ribbon. Other military service awards include the North Atlantic, European, American, Asiatic and Pacific Ribbons and was awarded his Air Crew Wings for two major aerial combat engagements.

He married Miss Floy Mize of Lakeland, Florida. They were the proud parents of two sons, Gary and Forrest Sawyer.
