Clarendon Pioneer Dies

James Swift, 78, long-time Donley County rancher and Clarendon banker, died about 9:45 a.m. today in the Clarendon hospital where he had been admitted Saturday after suffering a heart attack. He was the brother of Mrs. Frank L. Decker of Childress.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete but will be held in Clarendon.

Mr. Swift was president of the Farmers State Bank at Clarendon.

Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Emmett Simmons of Clarendon; a son, Dr. James Swift Jr., of Dallas and Wichita Falls; seven sisters, Mrs. Decker of Childress, Mrs. Roy Bartlett of Clarendon, Mr. [sic] Frank Meadows of San Angelo, Mrs. Clyde Tunnell of Farwell, Mrs. Esther Ingram of Panhandle, Mrs. Powell Combs and Mrs. Tubby Stanley, both of Amarillo; a brother, Grover Swift of Miles City, Mont., and two grandchildren.

Funeral Rites For J.D. Swift Set Wednesday

CLARENDON - Funeral services for J.D. Swift, president of the Farmer's State Bank and Trust Co., will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the First Baptist Church here.

The Rev. W.R. Lawrence, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Citizens Cemetery by Murphy Funeral Home.

Mr. Swift died Monday in Adair Hospital following a brief illness.

He had been chief executive officer of Farmer's State Bank for 49 years. He began his banking career in Canyon after graduation from West Texas State University and continued it in Memphis and Hedley before moving to Clrendon [sic].

He was also engaged in ranching in Donley, Hall and Armstrong counties. He was one of the organizers of the Production Credit Association in Donley and Hall counties.

Mr. Swift served as treasurer of the Donley County Red Cross chapter for 25 years and was an honorary director of the Rolling Plains Registered Beef Cattle Association. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Rachel; a daughter, Mrs. Emmett O. Simmons of Clarendon; a son, Dr. James Swift of Wichita Falls; seven sisters, Mrs. Ester Ingrum of Panhandle, Mrs. Frank Decker of Childress, Mrs. J. Roy Bartlett of Clarendon, Mrs. Frank Meadows of San Angelo, Mrs. Clyde Tunnell of Farwell, and Mrs. W.A. Stanley of 2602 S. Hayden and Mrs. Powell M. Combs of 1019 Sunset, both in Amarillo; a brother, Grover of Miles City, Mont., and two grandchildren.

The family prefers that memorials be in the form of contributions to the Clarendon College Landscape Fund.
