Husb. of Esther Susan Hoyt, dau. of Dr. Milo Hoyt & Lydia Lowrey; M/o & Father of Darius E.; Lydia Ann; Clara Alice; Henry Julian; & Wm. Wirt Ward. James was murdered by Union Army Cherokees near the Moravian Mission. Esther took their children and Florence, dau. of her dead brother Dr. Hinman B. Hoyt, traveling to West Salem, Illinois to seek refuge. She died there in January, 1864. James & Esther's children eventually returned to Indian Territory; Clara Alice Ward, R.N. pursued a lifelong nursing career.James was the son of James Ward Sr., and nephew of George Ward, Cherokee Nation.
