Passed on to the higher life
from her home in the Township of Rich
February 9th. Mattie, daughter of Harvey and
Phebe Chaplin, aged 9 years and 8 months
The circumstances attending this death
were of a very painful nature the children
being left alone in the house for a few
moments this one in reaching over the [pencil notation: stove] for
something, her clothing caught fire and
instantly she was enveloped in flames
frantic with fright she ran from room
to room only the faning flames until her clothing
[to room only fanning the flames until her clothing]
was nearly consumed Her mother coming
in at that moment caught a pail of
water and threw it over her extinguishing
the fire but too late to save the little life
The afflicted family have the heartfelt
sympathy of all their friends and neighbors
in this sad bereavement And while we
mourn it is not as those without hope
for we know that
To the home of the beautifull Angels
Away from all darkness all sorrow and care
They have taken our dear little Mattie
To dwell with the loved ones there
Like a beautifull flower just unfolded
She’ll bloom in God’s garden of love
Cared for by Angels and guarded
As through the bright mansions they rose
Ah, Mattie, dear darling, I see thee
Not down in the cold narrow tomb
But yonder in brightness and beauty
Gone out from the darkness and gloom
And I hear thy soft low voice of pleading
As it floats back to me on the hurtful evening air
That the dear ones left here would cease their sad grieving
For you are happy and blest in your home over there”
