LCPL Stephen L. Zobel (Headquarters Battery/12th Marines) and CPL Brent R. Jones and SGT David E. Lemcke (both 1st Battalion/40th Artillery Army) were in the ammunition bunker at FSB Alpha 1 on May 21, 1968 when a fire erupted when an illumination flare and grenade were detonated by the accidental discharge of a rifle which was being cleaned by an individual in the bunker. All three personnel perished in the inferno.
