Arthur Jr. was born in Orange, Mass. and grew up there, until later years, when he was then placed into a monastery in New York City. He remained there until he was 17. He then joined the United States Marine Corp. After basic training at Parris Island, S C. - Arthur was sent to the islands, Samoa, Eniwetok and Guam, to fight in the war with Japan. During his time on Guam he cleaned out a machine gun nest even though he was a Mortarman, and it was hand to hand. His best friends were SGT Ernie Hudson, and CPL Lavern Lutterman. Arthur was killed by multiple wounds when a mortar shell hit him directly. He was awarded the Purple Heart, which was presented, along with his flag, to his older sister - Everline Squires. PVT Squires was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps, we offer thanks to his service, his name adorns the wall at the Military Museum of the Pacific, Guam. He was a member of the 22nd Marines, 1st Provisional Brigade, Company C, Fire Brigade. At the time of his death he was survived by his sisters, Everline Jackson, Patsy Neer (Polls) Jones, Cora Etta Squires, his father Arthur C. Squires of Conn. (note: it's unknown if Squires Sr. was aware of his son's death in 1944, as his flag and metals were presented to his sister, Everline of Proctor Place, New Hampshire). Sr. died in 1954. Arthur's marine nickname was Douche. He had a wry sense of humor, tall, blond, he had long feet. Arthur was with the first Marine division in Guadalcanal when their division was cut down in size, due to heavy losses. They became part of the 22nd Marine Division, 1st Provisional Brigade, Company C. After Guam they were disbanded.
