Mr. Small passed away on December 2, 2004. Born to Esther and Arthur Lawrence Small on November 18, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois, Phil spent his youth in Sydney, Australia, Charlotte, NC, and his summers in Yarmouth, Maine.
Attending Duke University at age 16, Phil was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa honorary fraternity (ODK) and Pi Kappa Phi social fraternity, and manager of the Duke University baseball team. He graduated with a BA in history in 1938. While serving as a US Navy Lieutenant flight instructor in Corpus Christi, Texas during World War II, he married Rosalie Doxey Winslow in 1943, to whom he was wed for 62 years.
Phil had a forty-four year career as an investment advisor, the majority with Dean Witter as Vice President and local manager. He was a Board Member of Child Care Resources, WTVI, American Red Cross, Planned Parenthood and Charlotte Country Day School.
Variety was Phil's forte as Adjunct Professor of Investments at UNCC, serving on the National Association of Securities Dealers Board of Arbitration, the Board of Angier B. Duke Regional Scholarship Fund, was a Member of Charlotte Country Club, Charlotte City Club, Piedmont Club, and 1952 Area Chairman of Citizens for Eisenhower, as well as a devoted Trustee, First Reader and Sunday School Teacher of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Charlotte, NC.
Beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Phil was most known for his love of the Duke University Blue Devils, Republican politics, Swing music and dance, plus his sailing heritage, uncanny tennis backhand, noble character, and always dry wit.
Phil was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Rosalie. He is lovingly remembered by three children, all of Charlotte: Philip Winslow 'Kip' Small, Deborah Small Harris and her husband, John William Harris, and Arthur Lawrence Small. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Winslow Morrison Harris of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Sara Harris Hutchinson and her husband William Owens Lewis Hutchinson, John William Harris III and his wife Anna Dings Harris, Arthur Lawrence Small III, and Andrew Weathers Small. He is also survived by his niece, Patricia Willis and son David, and cousins Diana Calby and her husband Joseph, and Caroline Campbell Knott and her husband Robert of Chatham, New Jersey.
