Major League Baseball Player. For seven seasons (1963, 1965 to 1970), he was a pitcher with the Boston Red Sox, Seattle Pilots and Los Angeles Dodgers. The son of former Major League catcher Joe Stephenson, he was raised in Anaheim, California where he attended high school. Signed as an amateur free agent by the Red Sox in 1961, he broke into the big leagues with Boston on April 14, 1963 (his only game that season). Throughout his career Stephenson struggled with a high ERA, but enjoyed his most successful season as a member of the 1967 American League Pennant-winning Red Sox team, when he appeared in 8 games, while recording 3 wins with a 3.86 ERA. He pitched in 1 game during the 1967 World Series, and allowed 2 runs in two innings. He was on the roster of the Seattle Pilots (later Milwaukee Brewers) in 1969, as the franchise made their league debut that season. In 67 career games, he compiled an 8 win 19 loss record, with a lifetime 5.70 ERA in 238 innings pitched. Following his playing career, Stephenson served as an advance scout for 39 years with the Dodgers and Red Sox. He died from cancer at age 66.
