Anna Herr Clise was the founder of today's Children's Hospital and Medical Center, a world-renowned children's health facility in Seattle. In 1898, her five-year old son Willis died an untimely death—she believed part of the problem was a lack of suitable care. So in 1907 she called together 23 affluent Seattle women friends to create a facility to treat crippled and malnourished children. Each of the women contributed $20 to launch Children's Orthopedic Hospital. The hospital opened first downtown, sharing an adult hospital's space. The group then had the first children's only facility built on Queen Anne Hill in 1908, remaining there until 1953 when the hospital moved to Seattle's Laurelhurst neighborhood. Anna was married to James W. Clise and during the latter part of their lives they resided in Redmond, on large acreage now known as Marymoor Park.
