Martin Whitmore was the son of Jacob O. and Ann (maiden name unknown) Whitmore. He was the second of seven children. He was born in Culpepper Co., VA, but in 1779, the family moved to Rockingham Co., VA, on the road between Weyer's Cave and Keezletown.
On 12 June 1789, he married Eve Elizabeth Slipera/Sleppa Ten children were born to this marriage: Jacob Henry, Daniel, Samuel, John S., Elizabeth, Martin, Susan, Ephraim, Anna, and Sally.
According to the book "Descendants of Jacob O. Whitmore" by Grace Kilmer Whittemore, 1995, Martin inherited just over 51 acres of land from his father on Collin's Branch; bought the Gravely farm; then the farm on Briery Branch; and then 1400 acres on Moffett's Branch near Parnassus, in Augusta County, VA. The latter property is where his four sons, Jacob, Daniel, Samuel, and John lived and died.
Three of Martin's sons (Jacob, Samuel, and John S.) married three Altaffer sisters (Nancy, Catherine, and Betsy)and all are buried at Parnassus. His daughter, Sally, also married into the Altaffer family (Reuben).
Sometimes Martin and children spelled the name "Whitmer," and you may find it either way.
Martin and his wife are buried at Frieden's Church, Rockingham Co., VA.
