Peter Dovel was one of six children born to David Dovel and his wife Barbara Blosser (or Bolser) of Rockingham (later Page) Co., VA. Like his father, Peter became a prominent farmer in Page Co., highly respected in the community. He married three times:
1.) Elizabeth Ann Keyser (1792-1831), married on August 28, 1807
2.) Marie Nauman (d. 1850), widow of James Housden, married January 24, 1832
3.) Julia Ann Jenkins (ca. 1804-1870), married November 14, 1850
By his first wife , Peter Dovel had ten children: Isaac Columbus (b. 1811), Abraham (b. 1813), Jacob B. (b. 1816), Andrew J. (b. 1818), Ann Eliza (b. 1820), Peter S. (b. 1821), Elizabeth (b. 1822), Mary Catherine (b. 1826), Barbara A. (b. 1829), and John H. (b. 1831). The birth of the last child probably caused the death of the mother.
Peter Dovel died of pneumonia. Isaac Columbus Dovel recorded his father's date of birth as April 2, 1777 and death as 16 April 1870 and noted his age as 93 years, 4 days--a minor discrepancy.
