He was the oldest of the six children of Henry A BROWN and Louisa Jane CARPENTER.

Carey was of medium height and build with fair hair and blue eyes.

His father was a farmer and Carey became a farm laborer.

On Mar 17 1901, he married Eva Lucinda CRUM. They had three children:

Viola BROWN 1903 – 1956
Olive Eloise BROWN 1905 – 1992
Clovis Wayne BROWN 1906 – 1985

Eva died 11 May 1909. It was difficult raising three small children on his own. Carey took a job as a hired man working for John May. His children were cared for by his in laws: the two youngest with Eva's parents, Jacob and Martha CRUM, and the oldest with Eva's sister Bertha [CRUM] MOOD.

On Dec 21 1910 Carey married Flossie Mae Robinson. Together they had five more children:

Naomi Lucille BROWN 1912 – 1977
Pearl Edna BROWN 1914 –
Bell Christina BROWN 1916 – 1986
Vanita Freda BROWN 1919 – 2003
Rodney F BROWN 1923 – 1997

When Carey was younger he hired out as a farm laborer for others. He spent most of his life in or close to Monroe County, but he also worked as a farm laborer in McClean IL (circa 1918). By 1930 he owned a farm of his own in Washington TWp. Monroe County.

His wife, Flossie, predeceased him in 1958 and Carey passed away in 1961 at the age of 81.
