Samuel Britton "Singing Sam" McCormick 72, a longtime Bisbee miner, died in his home in Tucson, Arizona.
Mr. McCormick was born in McCullah County, Texas in 1908. Mr. McCormick married Leara Otha Johnson in 1928. He and his wife moved to Bisbee, Arizona in 1941.
Mr. McCormick worked for the Phelps Dodge Corporation for 30 years. His friends and work mates nicknamed him "Singing Sam", because of his love for singing and his ability to entertain them while they worked underground.
When he retired from Phelps Dodge Corporation Feb 24, 1972 his fellow workers gave him as a token of respect and friendship specimens from a vein of ore he discovered that was named "The Singing Sam Ore Body".
Funeral services were held at the Hatfield Memorial Chapel. Minister Robert Need officiated. Interment followed at Cochise Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Samuel McCormick is now survived by one daughter Dolores Romona Sprott of Sacramento, California, and one son, Bobby Britton McCormick of Randle, Washington.
Preceded in death is his wife of 50 years, Leara Otha Johnson McCormick in 2007, a son in 1994, Ronald David McCormick, and three brothers, Tom, Charley and Almon McCormick.
