Aged Lampasas Co. Citizen Dead

W.L. Bradley, 88 years and 8 months old, died at the family home 7 miles east of Lampasas Saturday, May 25, at 11:15 a.m. He had been sick only since Monday before, death being due to a heart attack.

Funeral services were held at the Briggs-Gamel Funeral Home Sunday afternoon at 5 o'clock and burial was in Oak Hill cemetery. The services were conducted by the Rev. R. H. Mathison, pastor of the Baptist church.

William Lawrence Bradley was born in Arkansas September 11, 1851. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Bradley, came to Texas when the child was just a year old, settling at Austin. Two years later they came to Lampasas and this had been the home since, for more than 85 years of the life of the deceased. He was engaged in farming all along and was well liked by all who knew him, being honest and upright and one of the old timers of this section who knew the hardships and privations of the very early days.

Sixty four years ago Mr. Bradley married Miss Elizabeth Underwood and to this union were born seven children, six of whom survive his passing, one son, Earl, having died 6 years ago.

Surviving are the aged widow and the six children, Mrs. John Maund, Lampasas; Mrs. M.J. McMaster, Corpus Christi; W.A. and Arch Bradley, Lampasas; Charley Bradley, Port Arthur, and Miss Bertha Bradley who lives with her mother. There are also one brother and three sisters living, George Bradley, Lampasas; Mrs. C.B. Marsh, Dallas; Mrs. J. Thomas, Galveston and Mrs. Ed Brown, Temple.

NOTE from Barbara HUNTER: On the web page for Alvin William BRADLEY, (Memorial # 53376912) the parents are listed as: William L. Bradley (1851-1940) and Elizabeth N. Underwood Bradlely (1857-1951).

It is possible that Alvin William BRADLEY (1918-1993) is a grandchild of William Lawrence BRADLEY (1851-1940) + Elizabeth Nagel (UNDERWOOD) BRADLEY (1857-1951). William would have been 67 and Elizabeth would have been 61 when Alvin William was born. Therefore, it is unlikely they had a child born in 1918. (1918-1851=67 ; 1918-1857=61).

William and Elizabeth had a son named William Ambrose "Bill" BRADLEY(1881-1976). At this time (Nov 2011) I do not have information that he had a son named Alvin William, however, it is my guess that this could turn out to be the case. William Ambrose married Annie (PITTMAN) (1897-1994). In 1918, William Ambrose would have been 37 and Annie would have been 21. (1918-1881=37 ; 1918-1897=21)

Proof of Alvin William's birth and parents would be greatly appreciated.

In the obit for William Ambrose BRADLEY (1881-1976) two surviving children are listed: (1) Larry BRADLEY living in Minnesota, and (2) Annie (BRADLEY) JONES living in California.

Note from Barbara HUNTER: The 1900 U.S. Federal Census (Population Schedule), Lampasas, Texas lists the following children for Wm L and Lizzy N BRADLEY :
- Myrtle BRADLEY age 22 ;
- Flossie BRADLEY age 20 ;
- Wm A BRADLEY age 19 ;
- Earl J BRADLEY age 16 ;
- Archie BRADLEY age 14 ;
- Chas BRADLEY age 11 ;
- Bertha BRADLEY age 9 ;

The child Wm A age 19 is William Ambrose "Bill" BRADLEY.

Also living in the household is Emily C DURR age 73.

Note from Barbara HUNTER: It is possible that Alvin William's father might be Earl J, Archie, or Charles BRADLEY.
Married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Nagel Underwood (1857-1951) on Sept. 3, 1876.
