Lord High Chancellor of Great Britian. 1st Viscount Maugham. Frederic (or F.H., as he preferred to be called) served as Britain's Lord Chancellor from 1938 to 1939. Educated at Dover College and Trinity Hall, Cambridge, he began his legal career in 1890, becoming a King's Counsel in 1913. He was knighted in 1928, and in 1935 he entered the House of Lords as Baron Maugham of Hartfield in the county of Sussex. He was made Lord Chancellor in 1938 by Neville Chamberlain. Upon his retirement he took the title Viscount Maugham. He was an older brother of author W. Somerset Maugham.
