Miss Emily Stowe Kendrick, 82, passed away April 16, 2010 at her home. She was born in Gastonia August 2, 1927, daughter of the late J. Ralph, Sr. and Emma Stowe Kendrick.

She attended Gaston County Schools and graduated from Gastonia High School in 1945. Emily is a 1949 graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College with a degree in education. She taught one year in Gaston County before moving to the Mecklenburg County Schools. She taught at Alexander Jr. High School, Long Creek School, and North Mecklenburg High School, where she also coached girls' basketball. After finishing her teaching career, Emily received a license in Real Estate and owned and operated Kendrick Real Estate Company in Gastonia until her retirement. She served on the Gaston Healthcare Board of Directors at Gaston Memorial Hospital from 1991 to 1999. She was a supporter of the Girl Scouts, The American Cancer Society, several animal rights groups, was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, and served many other charities.

Survivors of Miss Kendrick include her brother, J. Ralph Kendrick, Jr. and wife Sara Catherine; nieces, Priscilla K. Quinn and husband Doug, all of Gastonia; Molly K. Randolph and husband Johnny of Kings Mountain, NC; great-nephew, Lee Benton of Charlotte; and her very special friends, Joe Hamme and Robin Cherry, both of Gastonia.

Emily loved her family, her friends, and her pets, Abigail and Suzy.

She took great pride in her family heritage, her associates, and her former students. She was an avid sports fan, especially Carolina and ACC Basketball.

The family would like to thank the special nurses and caregivers that Emily loved, for their help and compassion.

A service to celebrate Emily's life will be held 2pm, Sunday, April 18, 2010 in the Sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church of Gastonia with Rev. John L. Frye, Jr. and Rev. John Stanley officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church. Interment will be held privately for the family at New Hope Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Honorary Pallbearers will be former students, members of her girls' basketball team, and fellow educators.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gaston Hospice, PO Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28054; American Cancer Society, 6000 Fairview Rd., Charlotte, NC 28210; or Schnauzer Rescue of the Carolinas, 2643 Tumbleweed Drive, Lenoir, NC 28645.
