Harry Ellis Benton, 81, of Monticello, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2013, at his residence. Mr. Benton was born in Monticello to the late Herman Gay Benton and Sallie D. Ellis Benton. He served in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Before retirement, he worked for the Georgia State Patrol.

Mr. Benton was an avid reader, enjoyed growing and arranging flowers, always had a joke to tell, and was fondly known as "Harry Uncle" by some of his nieces. Along with his parents, Mr. Benton was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Herman Gay Benton, Jr., John Marcellus Benton, Julia Shevlin, Annabel Collins, and Sara Virginia Benton; and nephew, Charles Shevlin.

He is survived by his sister and brother, Betty Hardeman of Monticello, and Billy Benton of Brandon, Fla.; nieces and nephews, Gay Morrison, Gayle and Jesse Slagle, Kathie and Wes Spencer, Dave and Sheryl Hardeman, Nancy Baeder, Mike and Blair Collins, Ginger and Mike Rivera, Jill and Mike Fergueson, Johnny and Flora Shevlin, Patricia and Ray Rush, Margaret Shevlin, Betsy and Steve Watson, Barbara and Robert Albright, and Johnnie Faye Bracken; 27 great-nieces and nephews; and 23 great-great nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at 2 p.m. at West View Cemetery.
