Maria Adrian, daughter of Christopher and Caroline Adrian, was born December 8, 1860, in Wolcottsville, Niagara County, New York. She was the youngest of nine children. Her parents and seven of her older siblings had immigrated from Rüggkang, Mecklenburg Schwerin, Germany, to America about 1855 and had settled in New York State. Her father and oldest brother were both members of Company H, 151st Infantry Regiment New York and veterans of the Civil War.
After the War, the family moved to Michigan, settling first in Macomb County. In the early 1870's the family moved to Presque Isle County.

In addition to becoming a step-mother to Christoher, John and Mary had a son whom they named 'Frank' in August of 1880; however, the child only lived a few months and passed away on December 7, 1880.
John and Mary owned their own farm in Bedford Township, Calhoun County, and made their home there for over forty years.
