Horrible Fate of Ross Bush While "hopping" a freight.

(From Friday's Daily.) Ross Bush, age 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bush, south Washington street, died at 7 o'clock this morning at the city hospital of injuries he received at 3:25 while attempting to board the Indianapolis Southern fast freight No. 52 at the station platform. In his mangled condition he laid on the high Walnut street trestle, where he had been rolled, for half an hour before his groans were heard.

Bush has been working at the Capital City Bottling Works, at Indianapolis, and came home Wednesday for a short visit with his parents. Early last evening he left telling his mother that he was going to catch a train out for Indianapolis. Freight train No. 52 was due here at 12:20 but did not arrive until 3:25. As there were no orders here the engineer was given a "high ball" and passed by the station at a lively speed. Harper Powell the night operator, saw young Bush fail to board the train when he attempted it directly in front of the office. Bush ran toward the end of the platform after the train and as he did not re-appear Powell thought he had boarded safely. Half an hour later Edward Hupp, an I. S. employe who lives near the trestle, heard low moans. He awakened Agent Draper and the two found Bush lying on the trestle. His left foot was almost mashed off, his head was badly crushed and his right arm was broken. His clothing was soaking in a pool of blood and he was unconscious. The body had been carried for a distance of 30 feet and pieces of bone and flesh were scattered along the track. Bush was lying on the very edge of the 75 foot trestle at Walnut street, when found.

Dr. Frank Holland was summoned and a hurried run was made with the Harrell ambulance. The unconscious boy was taken to the hospital and everything possible done, but death came about 7 o'clock.

Mrs. Bush had been warning the boy of late about riding the trains, and as she had been expecting an accident of some sort was in a way prepared for the terrible news received by telephone this morning.

The body was taken to the home where funeral will be held Saturday at 2 o'clock in charge of Rev. Brown. Besides the father and mother there are two brothers and one sister to mourn the young man's untimely death: Thomas, Roland and Goldie Bush.

The pallbearers will be Perry Pryor, Talmadge Hawkins, Rex Forsythe, Clovis Marxson, Fred Cates and John Mitchener.
