In 1834-5, the Hon. H.M. Vandeveer taught the first school in the extreme north part of the county. The building in which this school was taught, was located on Mosquito creek, on land then owned by old Mr. Fletcher, now a part of the land owned by Moses Stafford, on the Decatur and Springfield road.
The salaries in the above case ranged from eight to fifteen dollars per month.

As a young man he was a teacher and taught school on the Fletcher property in Mosquito Twp, Christian County, IL. Democrat member of Illinois state House of Representatives, 1843, 1861. He served in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War. He was Presidential Elector for Illinois in 1848; county judge 1849-57; delegate to Illinois state constitutional convention representing Montgomery and Christian counties in 1862; member of Illinois State Senate, 1863; Circuit Judge in Illinois, 1870-79.
