During his time, he was a known Erie athlete. Ainsworth Field is named for him. In 1923, the ballpark opened under the name "Athletic Field." The name was changed on August 25, 1947 to honor James "Doc" Ainsworth, a longtime adviser of Erie's youth. Babe Ruth played an exhibition game there. It hosted minor league games until another ball park opened in 1995 and currently is used for high school and other amateur baseball games.
